Seattle home remodel features a second story addition and high performance updates.

Hammer & Hand has wrapped on a Seattle home addition project in Ballard’s Sunset Hill neighborhood. When the clients, a pair of creatives who work from home, needed more space for their growing family and business they were faced with a choice. Do they look for a larger home in a different neighborhood or remodel their current one? The couple decided to invest in their current home in order to stay in their Sunset Hill neighborhood in Ballard.

To give the family more room, H&H built a second story addition which included a master bedroom, bathroom, hall closet, office, guest room, and tatami room. During the remodel, H&H also improved other areas of the home including adding high performance windows, remodeling the basement, and improving the insulation in the walls.  (Learn more about H&H’s home addition services.)

H&H refinished the floors in red oak with a gradient pattern. The team crafted the staircase to match, using red oak for the banister and stair treads.

The red oak stairs lead up to the new second story which features a long hallway leading to the newly added rooms.

At the other end of the hall, double doors lead out to a Juliet balcony at the front of the home. Natural light pours in through the glass doors.

The master bedroom, like the rest of the home, features airtight high efficiency windows from Atrium. The bedroom also features an open walk-in closet for the couple’s dressers and clothes.

The homeowners chose bamboo pullout cabinets for the vanity and a standing countertop sink for the bathroom. Private territorial views from the windows overlook Seattle.

A MAAX freestanding pedestal tub gives the bathroom a sculptural design element. A niche in the wall offers room for shampoo bottles, soaps, and tealight candles.

Floor and accent tile by Finishing Touch gives the bathroom a sophisticated, modern feel. A standing shower sits beside the pedestal tub with a glass shower door from Kartak.
