What’s the difference between an Ofuro and an American style bathtub?
Japanese Ofuro tubs are distinct from the standard American tubs in three ways: how they are used, the shape and dimensions of the tub, and the materials used to build the tubs.
How Do You Use an Ofuro?
While American tubs are generally used to get clean, the Ofuro tub is used to wind down and relax at the end of the day. Traditionally more than one member of the family would use the same pour of the ofuro, so cleaning before entering the tub is customary.
What are the Dimensions of an Ofuro?
Ofuros are deeper than standard American tubs – they’re typically deep enough to allow the person to sit upright in the tub and have the water come up to about the neck. The tubs are also more square than rectangular or oval and don’t have sloped edges.
What is an Ofuro Made Of?
In Japan, the tubs are traditionally made of Hinoki wood, also known as Japanese Cypress, which gives off a distinct evergreen scent when in use. In the United States, fragrant woods like Port Orford Cedar, Alaskan Yellow Cedar, Western Red Cedar, and Teak are often used.
In more modern designs, Ofuro style tubs are made of materials other than wood, like acrylic, fiberglass, plastic, or stainless steel.
