Certified Passive House Consulting

Passive House consulting by Hammer & Hand is informed by our on-the-ground and in-the-dirt understanding of build-ability in green building. Because we know both energy and construction, we know how to create practical, efficient, durable, and buildable assemblies. And with nearly 20 years of experience collaborating with designers, engineers and the trades in our own construction projects, we embrace the process of collaboration that is so key to successful high performance Passive House (aka “Passivhaus”) projects.

Using the Passive House Planning Package as a launching pad, we routinely run thorough parametric analyses of our projects at the very beginning of design. Sitting side-by-side with the project architect and other team members, we can fine-tune hundreds of variables in building design and construction to come up with the most cost-optimized design possible. And as experienced Passive House builders and Passive House consultants, we can provide myriad examples to the project team of real-world, high performance details and assemblies.

Hammer & Hand’s Passive House consulting and design toolkit includes:

  • Site shading/solar analysis: Employ state-of-the-art solar analysis tools and software to conduct an in-depth site survey of the property to establish solar availability and collect other constraints from the design team (like orientation and footprint).
  • Parametric analysis: Tweak and fine-tune key design parameters to determine what combination of Passive House strategies and designs will be the most cost-effective in reaching the performance goals of the standard.
  • THERM analysis: Measure and optimize critical building details and intersections to make accurate envelope calculations rather than overly conservative assumptions, allowing the team to optimize the design of the envelope.
  • WUFI & WUFI+ analysis: Use this dynamic hygrothermal energy model to predict movement of moisture than assemblies in a wet-dry cycle to ensure a dry, durable building assembly.

Our Passive House experts have an intimate understanding of high performance building and its application to a wide range of building technologies and typologies. Our building science staff includes: three Certified Passive House Consultants (CPHC), one PHIUS+ rater certified by the Passive House Institute US (PHIUS) and RESNET, and the immediate past President of the Passive House Alliance US (PHAUS).
