New Architecture Competition, “perFORM 2014,” Launches, Challenging Students And Intern Architects To Fuse High Design With High Performance Building.

Presented by Hammer & Hand, the design competition supports emerging architectural professionals’ development as designers of compelling high performance structures.  Cash prizes to be awarded by a jury of Northwest architects, builders and educators.

Hammer & Hand unveiled the “perFORM 2014 House Design Competition” today, a new architecture competition for emerging professionals.  perFORM 2014 stakes the claim that by fusing high design with high performance building, architects and builders can create structures of unsurpassed beauty and efficiency.  Architecture students and intern architects will submit designs for a single-family house in Seattle that achieve a specified, low-load energy use intensity.  Entries will be judged based on resourcefulness, replicability, and beauty.

“We developed this design competition to both support young designers and demonstrate that ‘high design’ goes hand-in-hand with ‘high performance,’” said Daniel Thomas, co-owner of Hammer & Hand.  “I’m eager to see the solutions that this new generation of architects creates.”

The competition jury is packed with heavy-hitters from the Northwest architectural community, including a recent dean of University of Washington’s College of Built Environments, a director of Seattle’s Integrated Design Lab, and principals from three rising-star firms in Seattle and Portland:

  • Daniel Friedman, University of Washington Department of Architecture
  • Jim Graham, Graham Baba Architects
  • Sam Hagerman, Hammer & Hand
  • Gladys Ly-Au Young, Sundberg Kennedy Ly-Au Young
  • Robert Peña, Integrated Design Lab (Peña also serves as perFORM advisor.)
  • Jeffrey Stuhr, Holst Architecture

1st and 2nd place winners in the categories of Student-Individual, Student-Group, and Intern-Individual will receive cash awards and publication, with winning entries unveiled on Earth Day, April 22, 2014.  Find competition guidelines and downloads at https://hammerandhand.com/perform/design-competition/
