The ADU and small house event is presented by Cascadia GBC and co-sponsored by Hammer & Hand.
Accessory Dwelling Units (aka backyard cottages) have made a mini-resurgence in both Portland and Seattle thanks to progressive policy changes in both cities. And that's great news – they hold promise as promoters of diverse, sustainable, multi-generational communities.
With an eye to further propel this movement, Cascadia Green Building Council will host the 2012 Build Small Live Large housing summit this Friday, October 26. Subtitled "A Market Revival for Single-Family Housing," the event will run from 8am to 5pm at Portland State University's Smith Center. For more info or to register, visit http://living-future.org/cascadia/buildsmallHammer & Hand's own Sam Hagerman will present twice to summit attendees, first on a panel entitled "The Trouble With Small," and later in a 10-slide multi-media "SLAM" to close out the day.
In his presentations, Sam will highlight to two Hammer & Hand case studies, our Super-Efficient ADU designed by Departure and the Alameda Ridge ADU. He'll discuss challenges that the two small houses faced around efficiency, financing and planning, and will describe the solutions we applied to ensure success for both projects.Other panel discussions at the summit will cover design strategies, financing tools, development trends and more. If you'd like to learn about the ADU and small house landscape in the Cascadia region, this is one event you won't want to miss. - Zack
